SFMOMA (the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) is an internationally-renowned museum located in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1935, SFMOMA is dedicated to modern and contemporary art and boasts a permanent collection of over 33,000 works by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Man Ray, and Frida Kahlo. SFMOMA also hosts a range of special exhibitions from both emerging and established artists, as well as a variety of educational programs.
In 2016, SFMOMA underwent a major expansion, more than doubling its total square footage. The expansion included a new building designed by world-renowned architecture firm Snøhetta, which features a dramatic, angular atrium with a striking staircase. The museum also houses a new restaurant and café, as well as an outdoor sculpture garden.
In addition to its expansive galleries and educational programs, SFMOMA also hosts a variety of events, including guided tours, lectures, film screenings, and concerts. The museum also houses an extensive research library and archives, which are open to the public by appointment.
The museum is committed to making art accessible to everyone, regardless of their economic situation. To that end, SFMOMA offers free admission every first Tuesday of the month and discounts for students, seniors, and members of the military.
Whether you’re a novice or an art connoisseur, SFMOMA is sure to offer something for everyone. From its impressive permanent collection to its dynamic special exhibitions and events, SFMOMA is an essential part of the San Francisco art scene.
